Podocarpus bonsai care

Podocarpus is among the most forgiving bonsai material there is, but nearly every guide online is written for a four-season climate. This one describes the rhythm as it actually runs in the tropics.

The year in a tropical climate

In the Javan highlands podocarpus never goes dormant. Growth slows at the height of the dry season and surges as the rains arrive, but it never stops. There is no “spring window” for repotting — there is only the condition of the tree.

  • Early wet season (October–December): strongest growth. Best window for repotting and hard pruning.
  • Peak wet season (January–February): watch drainage; root rot risk is at its highest.
  • Dry season (June–August): growth slows. Ease off feeding, keep watering steady.

Six things to get right

Each guide below covers one topic in depth, including the mistakes we see most often.

Feeding

Because growth runs year-round, so does feeding. We use a slow-release organic solid every six weeks, eased back at the height of the dry season. High-nitrogen feed produces large leaves and long internodes — avoid it on trees in refinement.
