Pruning podocarpus bonsai
Podocarpus back-buds well on old wood, so you have more freedom than with most conifers. The key is separating pinching for refinement from cutting back for structure.
Pinching for refinement
As new shoots extend and the leaves begin to open, pinch out a third to a half of the tip with your fingers. This shortens internodes and forces division behind the cut. Repeat through the growing season on finished trees.
Do not use scissors for this — cut leaf tips brown off and stay visible.
Cutting back for structure
To shorten an overlong branch or rebuild structure, cut into old wood, leaving some foliage on the branch where you can. Podocarpus will bud from bare wood, but more slowly and less predictably.
The best window is the start of the wet season, when the growth surge is strongest and wounds close fastest.
Common mistakes
- Pruning the whole tree at once. Split it across two stages a season apart so the tree keeps its vigour.
- Pruning Blue Ice so continuously that foliage never matures into blue.
- Letting strong apical shoots run — the apex thickens and taper is lost.
